Synopsis

The increasing impacts of global warming on natural ecosystems, economies and societies necessitate the inclusion of climate-related issues in financial and non-financial reporting. Climate change, which is of great importance for both societies and organisations, shows that our current corporate approaches are unsatisfactory if we want to hamper the world from reaching misfortune conditions. Considering the diverse roles organizations play in society and the impact of large corporations on carbon emissions, it is expected that demands for accountability regarding climate change will continue to grow. Sustainable climate change accounting can be defined as a holistic accounting system where environmental impacts, social responsibilities and economic activities are evaluated together beyond financial reporting. Although traditional accounting systems are highly effective in evaluating the financial performance of enterprises, they tend to ignore environmental and social impacts. However, the steps taken by businesses in combating climate change can have significant impacts on long-term financial results. The study aims to demonstrate the importance of sustainable accounting in establishing a transparent and accountable framework for organisations, societies and governments to measure, monitor and mitigate climate impacts. In the context of sustainable climate change accounting; climate change, the impact of climate change on organisations and accounting, carbon accounting and accountability practices, accounting and climate change are discussed and detailed explanations are made. As a result; for the sustainable future of the global economy and the environment, the dissemination and adoption of climate-related accounting systems is of great importance.
