Synopsis
The aim of the research is to show the current status of scientific research on second home tourism by applying quantitative methods. For this purpose, the words “second homes” or “second home” and “tourism” were searched in the title, keywords and abstract sections in the Web of Science (WoS) database and 625 studies were reached between 1991-2024. The obtained data were analyzed using the Biblioshing interface of the Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R package program. As a result of the increase in both the number of studies and the number of citations over the years, it was determined that the subject of second home tourism started to attract attention in the academic literature, the scope of studies in this field expanded and the most studies were conducted in 2014 and the most citations were given in 2022. It was determined that the countries with the most publications on this subject were Spain, the USA, Norway, the United Kingdom and Sweden, and that the publications were mainly scanned in the SSCI and ESCI indexes. It was also determined that the most studies were published in the Scandinavian Journal of Hotel Management and Tourism. As a result of the keyword analysis, it was revealed that the keyword “second homes” was used the most. It was concluded that the data on second home tourism complied with Bradford’s law. However, it was determined that 85.7% of the researchers made only one publication. When this result was evaluated according to Lotka’s law, it was concluded that the relevant literature was insufficient and needed to be developed. In addition, results that did not match the findings emerged as a result of the application of Zipf’s law. It is thought that the study will guide future studies in terms of revealing the trends and important studies of second home tourism research.
