Synopsis

Blood collection is a situation that families and children frequently encounter in both outpatient and clinical services. Procedural practices such as blood collection, vaccination, and opening peripheral vascular access are unfortunately sources of pain and anxiety. The pain and ache caused by the interventions make it difficult to cooperate with the child during the procedure and the child's compliance with the treatment, and even cause the child to reject the treatment or the procedure. In addition, this situation tenses the parents as well as the children during the procedure and can sometimes cause arguments. For all these reasons, nurses should try to reduce or even prevent the anxiety that may occur in the child, as well as control the pain in order to reduce the negative effects of pain on the child and to minimize the pain due to the procedures. There are pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods used to relieve pain from the past to the present. These include eating something, applying certain applications to the painful area, or distracting attention. When the literature is examined, it is seen that there are many methods for nurses to use non-pharmacological methods in managing procedural pain and anxiety with today's technology, and the number of studies on the subject has increased considerably. As can be seen from the studies, there are non-pharmacological methods that can reduce pain and anxiety during blood collection or other interventional procedures, which are important not only for children but also for parents. This section was written with the aim of reviewing the literature and bringing together interventions that can reduce pain and minimize anxiety during blood collection from children.
