Synopsis
People take photos for many different purposes in their daily lives. With the technical development of cameras and the spread of camera phones, photo production has become an ordinary "everyday" practice. Artistic photography production has also been affected by these technical developments and many individuals have started to take photographs in this sense. With the opportunities offered by social media, individuals have the spaces to exhibit the photos they take. The production and sharing of photography (especially in the artistic sense), which has become an increasingly popular action, is an indication that popular culture has a significant impact on art.
The issue of the research is that individuals perform artistic production on various social media platforms in the context of the relationship between "social media and the art of photography" and this situation has become quite popular. In Instagram, one of the social media platforms, artistic photography is easily produced by many individuals, some of these individuals define themselves as "artist", “photography artist”, and "photographer" and thus become a part of popular culture.
The aim of the study is to reveal how the art of photography and the identity of the photographer/artist are reproduced in another sense in the axis of popular culture. In addition, it is the analysis of the social and cultural phenomena that Instagram photo accounts point to.
This study was carried out using qualitative research methods. The literature review was performed to be used both in the formation of the theoretical framework and in the analysis of the data. In the collection of data, semi-structured interview technique, one of the in-depth interview techniques, was used.
Among the reasons for the participants to prefer Instagram, factors such as individuals' search for a medium for the photographs they produce, their belief that the future of photography is Instagram, the fact that Instagram opens a free space for its users, reaching masses and gaining popularity through media platforms came to the fore.
