Synopsis

This descriptive research aims to determine the effects of false and negative religious beliefs along with traditional codes on the negative perceptions towards women. Besides, it also examines the roles of some demographic variables namely department, class year and gender on the same relationship. It helps to clarify the sources of negative perceptions towards women and test whether the religion has any affinity with it. The population consists of students in the Faculty of Theology at Manisa Celal Bayar University and Balıkesir University, and the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Manisa Celal Bayar University. The sample size is 612 students chosen by quote sampling from the class of 2019-2020 fall semester.

As far as the potential benefits are concerned, this research may build awareness and raise conscious levels regarding gender mainstreaming so as to eliminate gender inequality. Thus, it may contribute to improve the value given to women in today’s society. On the other hand, understanding the possible relationship between misconceptions in religion and negative perceptions towards women may call for better religious education. Finally, overcoming misconceptions in religion through detecting and eliminating false thoughts is itself a major possible achievement of the study. One of the key findings is providing scientifically based and accurate religious education may help lessen negative perception towards women.
