Synopsis
The concept of green leadership has gained significant popularity in recent years. Global population growth, resource depletion and increased consumption cause environmental pollution, ecological problems and climate change (Kerse, Maden and Tartan Selçuk, 2021). These issues, which have become a social problem, have also become a problem for businesses that provide their sustainability, especially with environmental resources. Organizations develop various strategies and take measures to combat these problems. Organizations that develop strategies to reduce environmental negativities set various goals and take various steps to achieve these goals in order to develop green practices, reduce environmental waste, contribute to energy saving and, most importantly, to ensure the existence of a sustainable and healthy environment. One of these steps is to ensure the presence of green leaders in the organization. Various definitions have been made in the literature on green leadership. For example, it is possible to define green leadership as a person who has the capacity to persuade other organization members to engage in environmentally friendly activities and inspire them about environmental sustainability (Hu et al., 2022). Another definition states that leaders are leaders who have the ability to influence their subordinates and mobilize them to achieve the organization's long-term environmental sustainability vision (Gultom, 2022). In the literature, emphasis is widely placed on leadership styles that promote green environments so that organizations can achieve sustainable goals, and it is mentioned that this type of leadership is effective in encouraging employees to exhibit green organizational citizenship behaviors in organizations. It has been mentioned in many articles that green leaders support environmentally friendly policies in organizations and create an environment of mutual harmony and cooperation between employees and leaders (Tong, Jabbour, Najam & Abbas, 2022; Kura, 2016). In addition, there are studies in the literature that address green leadership from various aspects such as sustainability, innovation, human resources management and green management policies (Oduncu, 2024; Awan et al., 2023; Acar, 2022; Kardoyo et al., 2020). In this section, after explaining the concept of leader in general terms, the concept of green leader will be discussed in depth, and different approaches on this subject will be explained. The section will be completed by touching on issues such as the characteristics of green leaders and their importance in terms of sustainability.
