Synopsis

The advent of technology has led to the development of a multitude of artificial radiation sources, which have become indispensable in a multitude of sectors. These include healthcare (radiology, nuclear medicine, etc.), nuclear power plants, space exploration, and industrial applications. One of the most effective methods for reducing radiation exposure to acceptable levels for humans in these applications is to shielding the radiation-emitting device and the area in which it is used with an appropriate material. The design of effective radiation shielding requires consideration of numerous parameters. The selection of radiation shielding material varies according to the energy and type of radiation. In addition to these factors, the density of the material, thermal conductivity, resistance to radiation-induced damage, and economic cost are also crucial parameters in the design process.
