Synopsis

The science of training has been a constantly developing field to improve the performance of athletes and to ensure long-term success. However, in today's dynamic world of sport, not only short-term performance improvement but also long-term sustainable development is becoming increasingly important. Within training science, the concept of sustainability involves both protecting the physical and mental health of athletes and optimising sport resources and environmental impact. In this context, sustainable training management plays a critical role in ensuring that athletes can perform at the highest level for many years to come and that sport can continue to have the same impact for future generations.

In the field of training science, sustainability is shaped around three main components: physiological, psychological and environmental. Physiological sustainability aims to ensure that athletes can continue their development without facing problems such as overtraining, injury and fatigue. Psychological sustainability increases the mental endurance of athletes and contributes to their motivation for a long time. Environmental sustainability involves ensuring that the materials, equipment and facilities used in training processes are environmentally friendly and that training causes minimal damage to nature.

At this point, qualitative research is an important method for understanding and developing sustainable training practices. Qualitative research methods allow us to gain a deeper understanding of athletes‘individual experiences, coaches’ strategies and long-term success plans. Qualitative methods such as interviews, case studies and participant observation offer valuable insights into how sustainable training programmes should be structured.

For example, through qualitative research, it is possible to find answers to questions such as the challenges athletes face during the training process, motivational losses, or which strategies are more effective for sustainable success. Likewise, coaches' perspectives on sustainability can help to improve policies and practices in this field.

This book explores the issue of sustainability in the field of training science in depth and examines how qualitative research contributes to this process. Throughout the book, strategies that can be used to increase the sustainability of training and qualitative research findings that support the applicability of these strategies will be presented. Focusing on the sustainability of athlete health and performance, this study aims to be a valuable resource for both academics and coaches working in practice.

In addition, this book constitutes the third book of our Sustainable Sport and Qualitative Research Series.

We hope that it will be a research book that will add great scientific meaning to the literature.
