Challenging Patient Groups in Inflammatory Bowel Disease; Pregnancy, Lactation, Fertility
Synopsis
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has a high incidence and prevalence in young individuals. Since patients affected by IBD are often in the reproductive age group, sexuality, heredity of the disease, the effects of medications and disease activity on fertility, pregnancy outcomes and breastfeeding should also be evaluated during the evaluation of patients. We can see delays in pubertal development and growth development in patients in the pubertal period due to both disease activity and medications used (such as corticosteroids). On the other hand, uncertainty about the health of the children of IBD patients may affect the family planning choices of the patients. Therefore, the management of patients who want to conceive or are pregnant requires specialized counseling and appropriate management. This includes a multidisciplinary approach and close participation of prospective parents under a shared decision-making model. By addressing these issues, we aimed to optimize and harmonize IBD management and counseling regarding pubertal development, fertility, pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and post-pregnancy.
