Aim: The aim of this study is to determine which antecedents and consequences are more commonly investigated in car rental and car sharing studies. For this purpose, articles on car rental and car sharing in the Scopus database were examined in terms of antecedent and consequence variables.

Method: The aim of this study is to determine which antecedents and consequences are more commonly investigated in car rental and car sharing studies. For this purpose, articles on car rental and car sharing in the Scopus database were examined in terms of antecedent and consequence variables. 125 articles on car rental between 1952 and 2022 and 348 articles on car sharing between 1978 and 2022 were analyzed.

Findings: In the studies related to car rental and car sharing, it has been seen that environmental factors, travel behavior, managerial factors, business models and methodological approaches stand out. In addition, consequences such as organizational, customer and social factors have been found in these studies. China produces the most publications car sharing while the United States produces the most car rental publications.

Results and Suggestions: In order to further consolidate the existing framework in car sharing research, cultural differences, business volume and modes of transportation can be examined. Environmental factors and sustainability can be addressed in car rental research. Studies can be conducted on rental behavior, innovation, entrepreneurship, benchmarking and agglomeration in both car sharing and car rental research.

Originality: It is thought that the study will make an important contribution to the literature due to the fact that it provides a general perspective on academic studies on car rental and car sharing.
