Synopsis
Healthy childhood development needs to be supported by 24-hour movement guidelines (adequate physical activity, limitation of sedentary behavior and adequate sleep). Many countries, led by Canada, have developed 24-Hour Movement Guidelines. The 24-Hour Activity Guidelines for children and adolescents (ages 5-17) recommend at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity during a typical 24-hour day. It recommends 9 to 11 hours of sleep for ages 5-13 and 8 to 10 hours for ages 14-17. No more than 2 hours of recreational screen time per day is recommended for children and teenagers. The 24-Hour Activity Guideline recommends at least 180 minutes spent on various physical activities throughout the day, including at least 60 minutes of energetic play for early childhood. During this period, 10 to 13 hours of quality sleep, including consistent bedtime and wake-up times and naps during the day, are recommended. Sedentary screen time should not exceed 1 hour. Compliance with these three movement behaviors (physical activity, screen time and sleep time) included in the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth is important for the implementation of lifelong healthy behaviors for children and youth.
