Synopsis
Orienteering is an outdoor sport that can be done for all ages. This sport, which was originated in Sweden, can be done in any terrain (city, park, school, etc.). the popularity of this sport is increasing in Turkey as well as all over the world. The Turkish Orienteering Federation was established in 2006 and the number of athletes increased rapidly with the structuring activities. The fitness level is very important in this sport, which will allow you to find the designated control points in the shortest time with the help of a map and compass. Different terrain structures and different running distances require specific training to this sport. In this sport, the athlete must have both good map reading ability and good condition. In this sport aerobic capacity is important but it requires as well as sprint ability and strength. Starting to orienteering at an early age is very important, especially for the development of map reading skills. Thus, the spatial visualization skills required for orienteering sport are developed at an early age. For this reason, long-term athlete development model is very beneficial. Aerobic and anaerobic training, strength, balance and endurance exercises are important in orienteering. In addition, when performing continuous running training, exercises with a map are also preferred. In this book chapter, conditioning skills that are important in training sports are discussed.
