Synopsis
In this review study, the synthesis methods of β-sulfonyl ketones have been examined in the literature and cover a period of 120 years. The first β-Aryl-β-sulfonyl ketones and β-Alkyl-β-sulfonyl ketones were synthesized by using strong acids and bases. In time, different Lewis acids, organometallic complexes and macromolecules were used due to the formation of by-products under these catalyst conditions. In this review, the importance of β-sulfonyl ketones in organic chemistry and synthesis routes are discussed in general. Different synthesis routes have been examined, especially the synthesis via [1,4]-tiya-Michael addition reactions, Grignard, Pulmerer/aldol condensation. The reaction mechanisms proposed in the synthesis studies are also given and it is also stated that the addition reactions proceed via carbanion carbocation or radicalic mechanism. In the last section, the literature on asymmetric synthesis studies is included. This review is an important contribution to the literature in terms of synthesis and mechanism diversity.
