Synopsis
Patients receiving care and treatment in intensive care units, experience unpleasant emotional states and bad experiences during their time in intensive care unit. It is known that one of the most negative experiences these patients have is pain, and if not treated appropriately, it can have detrimental effects on the patients' acute and chronic health conditions. In the literature, pain assessment is considered the fifth vital sign for patients and it is reported that pain assessment should be mandatory. In addition, current guidelines recommend that adequate pain treatment be provided by a multidisciplinary team and that patients' pain be relieved in order to improve the clinical outcomes of intensive care patients.
