Synopsis

In the field of graphic design, postmodernist thought emphasizes the influence of local, cultural, and historical contexts on the construction of reality, contrasting the objective tendencies of modernist thought. This experimental approach stresses the significance of factors such as multiplicity, variability, perspective, interpretation, and layering. The retro approach, incorporating references to past periods or styles, is now in line with postmodernist thought due to the diverse and layered nature of postmodernism. Within this context, Postmodernist artists strive to reexamine their relationship to the past and critique culture by utilizing past imagery in a contemporary and critical framework. From this perspective, the combination of art movements, including Pop Art, Art Deco, Psychedelic, Surrealism, Cubism, and Bauhaus, which influence the retro attitude, with modern projects reinterprets retro in a contemporary context.

Paula Scher is one of the designers who expertly applied the combination of retro aesthetics and postmodernist thought to graphic design. Scher embraced postmodern thought in graphic design, emphasizing experimentation and multiplicity, and prioritizing the significance of local, cultural, and historical contexts over modernist objectivity. Paula Scher's postmodern retro works are effective demonstrations of fusing retro aesthetics with modern projects and showcasing them in a contemporary context. Scher's typographic works showcase his experimental and creative attitude formed by blending retro sensibility and modernist thought alongside references to past art movements and stylistic elements.

The design world is expected to undergo increasing diversity and layering given the current design approach and future construction expectations. The kinetic stillness in Scher's typographic works can be seen as an example of the design styles we encounter in today's kinetic typography. Scher's typographic works and postmodernist retro design approach are thought to be significant contributions to the future of graphic design.
