Synopsis
Fear of crime is a phenomenon that can have such negative effects on individuals and societies that it can affect the quality of life. The aim of this research is to evaluate the victimization risk perception and fear of crime of male and female nursing students studying at universities in two different provinces. The data of our study, whose sample consisted of 453 nursing students (Kayseri: 222, Sinop: 231), were collected through a survey form consisting of four parts in May 2014. Analysis of the research data was done with the SPSS 21 package program. As a result of the analysis of the data, the average score of fear of crime is higher for men than for women according to gender, and this difference is statistically significant. The most feared areas of crime victimization are sexual assault, slander and murder; It has been determined that the most commonly used protection method against the fear of crime and the risk of victimization is not walking in deserted places. It has been determined that age, gender and being a direct/indirect crime victim affect students' fear of crime and victimization risk expectations. Media was a major concern among participants. As a result of the study, students' fear of crime was found to be at a medium level and their risk perception of victimization was at a high level.
