Synopsis

“New Media Art” is an art form that began in the 1960s with the use of computers as a tool for artistic expression and evolved with advancements in computer technology. It involves the convergence of various disciplines within the framework of science, technology and art. Starting in 1995, with the participation of the internet in the production of this art form, it turned into a global movement. This art form, which began almost simultaneously in the United States and Germany, emerged with the pioneering efforts of artists such as A. Michael Noll, George Nees, and Frieder Nake, who startde using digital computers to create images programmed with numerical data. In Turkey, early examples of New Media Art can be seen in the Works of Teoman Madra and Nil Yalter. New Media Art in Turkey has developed in two distinct period: the “Early Period” and the “Development Period”. The “Early Period” of New Media Art in Turkey began in the 1980s with the use of computers as a tool in art and continued until the widespread use of the internet in 1996. The end of this period was not solely determined by the proliferation of the internet but also by changes in the forms of artistic works produced and the modes of activity within the field. The “Development Period” of New Media Art in Turkey spans from 1996 to the present day.
