Synopsis

Single-sided deafness (SSD) refers to severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in one ear and normal or near-normal hearing in the other ear. Individuals with SSD experience certain significant changes in their auditory experiences. Some of these changes include; the loss of binaural cues when processing auditory signals, the impairment of the ability to localize sounds, and the decrease in speech intelligibility in noisy environments. Additionally, these auditory deficiencies can significantly impact children's maturation, which can lead to problems with speech and language development. Negative effects also include social and emotional problems as well. The increased listening effort in daily life caused by SSD may lead to learning problems by causing further cognitive exhaustion. All these situations can take the effects of SSD on children's academic success to a higher level. Determining the etiology of SSD is very important in providing appropriate intervention. There are multiple rehabilitation options available for people suffering from SSD, including; CROS hearing aids, bone conduction hearing aids, and cochlear implants. Both children and adults with SSD or asymmetric hearing loss can greatly benefit from the restoration of binaural hearing with cochlear implants. Cochlear implants can provide better speech perception and sound localization in SSD patients by electrically stimulating the ear with hearing loss and improving binaural hearing. The benefits of cochlear implants for speech understanding and localization in noise may be greater in some circumstances. Cochlear implants can also reduce the perception of tinnitus in individuals with SSD and therefore serve as a potential cure for tinnitus. In conclusion, all these benefits of cochlear implants can improve the quality of life of people with SSD.
