Synopsis

Religious travels have history are as old as human history. Visiting holy places is encouraged in all religions and belief systems. Although travels are generally encouraged in the religion of Islam, hajj is obligatory and umrah is encouraging. Many studies suggest that hajj and umrah travels are related to tourism and is considered a tourism event, while others argue that this journey is too comprehensive and spiritual journey to be explained by tourism alone. In this chapter, the concepts of hajj and umrah, the socio-cultural function of hajj and umrah, the hajj and umrah market, the legislation on hajj and umrah in Turkey, religious travel, religion and tourism, the relationship between religious travel and tourism, and the relationship between hajj and umrah and tourism are discussed.
