Synopsis

Turks, one of the most dynamic nations in history, have existed in many different parts of the world from ancient times to the present day. And they have established many states. It is possible to mention the names of many Turkish States in Asia, Europe and Africa, starting from the Asian Hun State. Since the Turks dominated such a wide geography, the socio-political borders of the Turkish world cover an extremely wide area. By the 20th century, apart from the Turks living in the Ottoman Empire, there were Turkish communities mentioned under various names in most of the Eurasian geography. These communities lived in Turkestan, Volga-Ural, Crimea, Azerbaijan and similar geographical regions.   A significant part of them lived under the rule of Tsarist Russia. The relations of these Turkish tribes, which we will call Russian Turks, with the Ottoman Empire began in the periods before the Russian occupation. Diplomatic relations were established primarily in the form of political correspondence or small-scale military aid. However, even though such relations were cut off after Russia occupied these regions; Cultural relations have always existed through pilgrimages or visits for educational purposes. Sacred places such as Mecca and Medina, especially Istanbul, have become visiting points for Russian Turks. In this process, the ideas of Jadidism and Turkism, which developed in the Turkish world, brought the two regions closer and increased the momentum of relations. With the cultural revival that started among Russian Turks, the interest of Russian Turks intellectuals and students in the Ottoman cultural world intensified. During this process, there were mutual comings and goings. In this study, the cultural awakening of Russian Turks in the early 20th century and the relations they developed with the Ottoman Empire within this framework will be evaluated.
