Synopsis
The Greek community, which ranks second after Muslims in terms of population in Edirne, started to open modern schools after the Tanzimat Edict. While the schools opened were at the primary school level at the beginning, secondary and high schools were opened in the developing process. By the beginning of the 20th century, more than 20 educational institutions of varying degrees were operating in 10 neighborhoods in the city, where Greeks lived intensively. Among these, Greek Boys' and "Zapyon" Girls' High School attracted particular attention during the period with the education they provided. The main task of these high schools was not only to train teachers for the Greek schools in and around Edirne, but also to instill "Hellenism" in children and raise Greek nationalist youth.
With the help of the Greek education associations, the Edirne Metropolitanate was dealing with all the problems of the community schools in the city and the students studying in these schools, and was implementing the decisions taken by the local and central administration regarding the educational institutions.
In this study, it is based on the registries numbered 70, 71, 72 of the Edirne Greek Metropolitanate, which is in the Historical Archive of Macedonia and is included in the Ottoman Catalogue. The aforementioned notebooks cover the years 1898-1920. Register number 70 relates to 14 June 1898- 5 November 1906 and register number 71 relates to 14 January 1914-20 July 1920. The registry number 72 consists of the official letters sent by the Ottoman administrative institutions to the Edirne Metropolitan between 1905-1909.
The aim of this study is to reveal the development of modern Greek high schools in Edirne between the years 1898-1915, the status of students and teachers, and the impact of the Edirne Greek Metropolitanate on educational institutions.
