Reflection of the Digital Media Issue on Postgraduate Theses Written in the Field of Public Relations

Synopsis

Although digital media is now an accepted and assumed part of daily life, it has also become an important component for individuals working professionally in the field of communication. On a global scale, the number of interdisciplinary studies should be increased to further develop public relations knowledge, especially on the attitude towards and adaptation to digital media. This study aims to examine and analyze the postgraduate theses written in the field of public relations in Turkey and the studies based on the subject of digital media among these theses. In this direction, a total of 172 theses, 132 master's, and 40 doctoral theses published between 2019 and 2023 and obtained from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Thesis Center, were examined by selecting the Department of "public relations" in the detailed screening. The general screening model was used in the research. The data accessed with this model were analyzed by the content analysis method. In the context of these categories, first of all, the university where the theses were published, its type, year, subject, method/data collection technique, and language were analyzed in the Microsoft Excel application. The way these theses, which were analyzed later, dealt with digital media was examined in line with the same categories. Accordingly, it has been concluded that most of the theses written in the Department of Public Relations since 2019 and the theses dealing with digital media have been published at Marmara University. At the same time, data collection with the survey technique was preferred the most in theses. Students mostly worked on the role of digital media / social media and the use of digital media / social media within the scope of digital media. In the conclusion section of the study, evaluations that can contribute to the field are also emphasized.
