Synopsis

Peter Drucker emphasizes that the fundamental functions for businesses to generate profit are marketing and innovation, while other functions are typically associated with cost. These two functions have historically complemented each other and interacted. Technological advancements have taken this combination to a new level, bringing about significant changes in the field of marketing. An example of these changes can be seen in the advent of digital marketing, which began in the mid-20th century with the invention of the internet. The rapid development of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed marketing strategies. Digital marketing is an approach that leverages the opportunities brought to the business world by information technologies and the internet to enhance the promotion and sales of products and services. Within this context, the integration of digital marketing with innovative technologies has been evaluated in historical terms. In this regard, the period from 1950 to 1970 is referred to as the era of digital marketing 1.0, with the invention of the internet being the most significant development of this era. The years from 1970 to 1990 marked the beginning of a new era known as digital marketing 2.0. During this period, the civilian use of the internet, previously confined to military applications, led to the foundation of digital marketing activities such as email marketing and mobile marketing. The years from 1990 to 2010, labeled as digital marketing 3.0, witnessed the prominence of websites and the laying of the foundations for today's social media marketing. The period from 2010 to 2020 is named as the era of digital marketing 4.0. This era is characterized by ultra-fast digital connectivity, the increasing importance of digital experiences, and the adoption of a multi-channel approach. Digital marketing 5.0 signifies an era in which big data plays a crucial role and is utilized in nearly all marketing strategies. Notable developments in this era include augmented reality, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and the integration of these technologies into marketing practices.
