Synopsis
In Turkey, the state has always been regarded as a sacred authority and has priority over the individual. For this reason, Turkey's security culture has been state-centered for a long time, reflecting the traditional security understanding. According to this approach, if the state is protected against internal and external threats, the society and the individual will also be protected. Especially in Turkey's security culture, the first feature related to internal security is that some problems that can be solved in the political field are securitized through the security discourse. For this reason, the discourse of internal threat in Turkey has been construct on the perception and securitization of society and politics as a threat for many years. The reflections of the securitization of society and politics are military coups that have been repeated almost every fifty years since 1950. Within the framework of these arguments; In the first title of this study, the historical dimension and general characteristics of Turkey's security culture are discussed. In the second title, the role and place of the army in Turkey's security culture has been analyzed. At the end of this study, which uses the descriptive analysis method, it is concluded that in the period from the first years of the Republic to the 1990s in Turkey, especially internal security was shaped by a narrow security understanding within the framework of the perceptions and attitudes of the relevant actors; however, it has been concluded that Turkey's understanding of both internal and external security has been evolving in parallel with the transformation of the current security approach in the international system in the early 2000s.
