Synopsis
Heinz Kohut, who worked as a traditional psychoanalyst for many years, saw the deficiencies of psychoanalytic theory over the years and based on his clinical experiences, he formed his own theory under the name of self-psychology towards the end of his life. His initial work to understand narcissistic development has developed over time into a comprehensive theory that addresses other psychopathologies. At the last point he reached, he believed that the main source of all psychopathologies was caused by disorders in the self and gave the theory its final shape in this regard. Kohut, who discussed narcissism in detail in theory, often emphasized the importance of narcissism for a healthy self-development. He stated that the self has two poles, the grandiose self and the idealized parental imago, and that mirroring and the object of self have an important place in the development processes of these poles. Kohut drew attention to the importance of optimal breaks in self-development and suggested that the self consists of three components: Ambitions, ideals, and talents and skills. Kohut, who classified the self disorders with three different titles, categorized the first group with personality and behavior disorders, the second group with self states and the third group with various personality types. He expressed the general purpose of therapy as the repair of the disorders in the self structure of the person and the restructuring of the self. Stating that introspection, empahty and self-object transfers are intensively involved in the therapy process, Kohut emphasized that empathy is the most important technique. With its different approach to narcissism from other theorists and its holistic view of the self, the psychology of the self is considered as a theory that makes a sound and makes important contributions to the literature.
