Synopsis
Many diverse academic perspectives have been developed regarding the single-party era that prevailed in Turkey between 1923 and 1946. These academic perspectives consist of assessments that aim to explain or interpret the qualities, practices, and methods of the Kemalist single-party era. These assessments vary from considering the Kemalist single-party era as democratic to characterizing it as authoritarian or even totalitarian. One way to examine and reconcile these differences and explanations is to focus on aspects of political party theory, particularly concerning single-party systems. In this section, we will first briefly touch upon the explanations of political party sociology in general regarding single-party systems. Then, we will attempt to present views on the evaluation of Turkey's single-party regime. This section aims to highlight both common and different aspects of academic perspectives on the single-party system in Turkey, with an effort to minimize delving into a detailed historical narrative of the period, and it will be limited to summarizing academic perspectives that emerged, especially after 1950, following the end of the single-party era in Turkey.
