Synopsis
Burns are caused by the exposure of parts of the epidermis and dermis layers that protect the skin to electricity, mechanical friction, freezing, prolonged exposure to the sun, radiation, flame, chemicals, high heat and hot substances. It is a significant health problem in cases where the subcutaneous, muscle, and bone systems are damaged at different depths and widths. While a significant group of patients presenting with burn injuries is treated as outpatients, a serious and sometimes complex follow-up, care, and treatment process is required for the patient group that needs to be treated as an inpatient in the burn unit.
Burns are serious injuries that can threaten life and are important in that they can cause disability. Thanks to the advances in acute care treatments and the establishment of modern burn treatment units, mortality has decreased in recent years. In burn cases, diagnosis, first intervention, treatment, and follow-up should be made by experienced teams. In life-threatening burns, rapid and on-site intervention and resuscitation are often life-saving. The treatment plan to be followed after the acute period significantly affects the recovery time, mortality, and morbidity rates in the next period. For this reason, it is extremely important to treat burn cases in centers that are specialized in their field, has a treatment algorithm according to the etiological factor and the patient's clinic, and are equipped with equipment for burn treatment.
